From breaking news to making news

A journalist’s instinct. A PR’s strategy. A storyteller’s voice.

I’m Laura Berrill, a former national newspaper journalist turned PR consultant. With over two decades of experience across newsrooms and agencies, I bring the best of both worlds to every client: sharp storytelling, strategic thinking, and media connections that count.

Journalist's curiosity meets PR's strategy

My career began after I completed EMAP’s graduate apprenticeship at the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. I cut my teeth on good old-fashioned local reporting — the kind that starts with a notebook, curiosity, and conversations on doorsteps. Along the way I covered a wide range of news, including crime, courts, and inquests, as well as writing real-life stories and features.

From there, I moved on to a newspaper in Sydney, Australia, wrote travel features, and after returning to the UK became news editor of a national technology magazine. I also wrote for The Times Online at a time when digital journalism was just starting to gain ground.

A recommendation brought me into the world of PR — and I never looked back. My first  role was in a fast-paced tech startup agency, where I learned to blend my editorial skills with strategic media planning. Since then, I’ve worked with leading agencies and independently across industries including:

Why great PR always starts with the story

At the core of my work is one thing: the story. I’ll dig deep into what makes your business different, identify angles the media wants to hear, and write content that grabs attention — whether it’s a press release, article, or thought leadership piece.

Here’s how I work:

With Laura Berrill PR, you get more than coverage — you get a clear voice in a noisy world. Whether you’re launching something new, raising your profile, or simply want your message to land where it matters, I’ll help make your story impossible to ignore.

How can I help your business?

Want to raise your business profile but not sure where to start? Look no further. I can help you tell your story and take that story out into the world. Whether it’s a simple one-off press release or a full media campaign with ongoing PR support, I have the strategies to get your voice heard above the noise.

Media relations

Media relations is one of the core aspects of any public relations business. Here my focus is on building and managing relationships with journalists and other media professionals to secure the positive, credible and influential ‘earned editorial coverage’ that grabs and holds attention.

PR support

While media relations plays a crucial role in successful PR, there’s a lot more to it! The PR support I offer goes far wider and covers an extensive range of communications channels and strategies aimed at shaping positive public opinion and building stakeholder relationships.

Giving SEN families a platform to be heard

My personal experience as the parent of an autistic child took me into a long, hard-fought, hard-won battle with the State’s tortuous special educational needs (SEN) apparatus.

I eventually succeeded, and now combine the lessons learned on my journey with my PR and media relations skills to support other SEN families. I’m here to help give them a voice as they too fight to secure the education and support their children are lawfully entitled to receive.

"Working with Laura has been a real pleasure. I had never needed or used a publicist before, so it was a real learning journey, but Laura made it very easy and it turned out to be a very productive association. As this was my first children’s book, finding a retail channel was always going to be difficult, however Laura managed to get access to Waterstone’s, as well as slots on local radio and in many of the local press.
